Dr. Anže Žerdoner Čalasan

Research interests

I am a biodiversity researcher in the truest sense. My work spans multiple domains of life, with a focus on the Australian plant family Amaranthaceae, the fungal genus Russula, and freshwater dinophytes. To explore the evolutionary histories and hidden diversity of these groups, I use a range of NGS-based approaches—including target enrichment, whole genome sequencing, and (meta)transcriptomics. My broader aim is to deepen our understanding of these fascinating, often overlooked lineages and to contribute to the development of innovative methods in biodiversity research.

My research emphasis is the taxonomy, nomenclature, biodiversity and phylogeny of hyphomycetes and ascomycetous fungi. Therein the economically important phytopathogenic groups of Cladosporiun s. l. and the powdery mildews (Erysiphales) are objects of current projects. The efforts also include biodiversity informatics.
