2.IX.1996 leg. H. O. Baral (no. 5565) & J. Deny
det. H. O. Baral
Note (by H. O. Baral, Tübingen, Germany): Micropeziza cornea occurs on Cyperaceae and Juncaceae whereas the closely related M. karstenii Nannf. occurs on Poaceae. According to Nannfelt (Bot. Notiser 129, 323–340, 1976) the two species are separated by the remnants of the shield. Studies mainly of fresh material of both taxa confirmed this and made clear that the shield hyphae at the apothecial base in M. karstenii are dark brown with up to 1 µm thick walls, while M. cornea has hyphae with medium brown, c. 0.2–0.5 µm thick walls. No additional distinguishing characters could be detected by analyzing the hymenial characters of living material. Possibly, the two taxa are therefore only ecological variants. Their affinity seems to be closer to Calycellina Höhn. than to the family Dermateaceae.

Microsphaera azaleae is indigenous in North America and introduced in Europe.
